ActionSA Joburg Caucus Welcomes the Restoration of the Rule of Law and the Efforts to Rejuvenate the Inner City
Press Statement by Nobuhle Mthembu
ActionSA CoJ Caucus Leader
ActionSA Joburg Caucus notes with gratitude the efforts by the Executive Mayor, Clir Dada Morero and his Mayoral Committee in implementing ActionSA-sponsored motion, the Inner-City Rejuvenation.
We welcome the efforts to reclaim all hijacked buildings, enforcement of by-laws and restoration of the rule of law. ActionSA views the efforts by the Executive as a positive step towards the Inner-City Rejuvenation.
ActionSA Joburg Caucus fully supports the move to reclaim the identified hijacked buildings in the City of Johannesburg and urges the Executive to develop a contingency plan to counter any legal challenges that may arise due to evictions. The city cannot be held to ransom by syndicates.
The recovered buildings can be handed over to investors to convert them into affordable rental units or convert them into Sectional Tittle Buildings.
We reiterate our call for the immediate implementation of the award of the more than 154 hijacked properties and 37 abandoned factories to the private sector for re-development, approved by the council already in 2019. These 154 properties were supposed to have created 22,000 permanent jobs during the construction phase, R32 billion in direct investments in the city and 14,000 housing units.
ActionSA will continue to closely monitor the implementation of the Inner-City Rejuvenation resolutions.
The City cannot continue to rent office spaces while its own properties are in the hands of criminals.
