ActionSA Joburg Caucus welcomes the VIP Protection Policy Judgement

ActionSA Joburg Caucus notes the High Court Judgement on the VIP Protection Policy. The Judgement, which declared this policy unlawful, reaffirms our position on this matter, as opposed to the malicious comments made by the blind as a bat DA Caucus Leader.

ActionSA was against this policy from the onset, and we even went further to vote against this policy in council.

There is already a provision which allows public representatives to apply for necessary protection if they face threats; we believe this provision is sufficient.

We argued that the resources intended for the VIP Protection should be redirected towards service delivery. However, we understood that the personnel would come from the JMPD pool.

It is worth noting that the security detail of Cllr Nobuhle Mthembu, the City of Johannesburg Council Speaker, is nowhere near what was stated on the VIP Protection Policy. Cllr Mthembu does not enjoy the luxury of having an entourage and a dozen bodyguards.

ActionSA believes that public representatives must be accessible to the very community that has voted them into power, rather than creating a barrier between them and the community.

Unlike on the 20th March 2024 when Council approved this unconstitutional policy, ActionSA is now occupying seats in the Legislature, and we will utilise our positions to ensure that the policy is consistent with the Act and the ministerial determinations. We will also ensure that any decision to enhance a particular municipal councillor’s personal protection allowance is consistent with the Act and the ministerial determinations, as it was directed by the court.

ActionSA urges the DA to cease their falsehoods and propaganda against our party, and instead collaborate with Council Speaker, Cllr Nobuhle Mthembu, in her endeavour to rectify the wrongs of the past.
