ActionSA Marks International Day Against Drug Abuse by Calling for Urgent Action to Save Communities

ActionSA commemorates the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking by recognising the millions of South Africans trapped in addiction, often with little to no support available in communities hardest hit by substance abuse.

While this day is observed globally to strengthen action against drug abuse and illicit trafficking, in South Africa it often passes with little attention, limited action, and even less urgency from those entrusted with protecting our communities.

The reality is that substance abuse continues to devastate families and communities across our country. Children are being exposed to drugs at alarmingly young ages, with some as young as six years old using substances and being neglected in homes that have effectively become drug dens. Meanwhile, many families suffer in silence due to the stigma associated with addiction, preventing those in need from seeking help.

ActionSA calls on families to break the silence surrounding addiction and urges communities to speak out against drug dens operating openly in residential areas, where criminality, neglect, and substance abuse continue unchecked, often at the direct expense of vulnerable children.

South Africa’s response to substance abuse continues to be undermined by a lack of political will. Local Drug Action Committees, which should be established and supported by municipalities, are either non-existent or effectively inactive due to chronic underfunding. These structures were intended to serve as frontline mechanisms to coordinate prevention, treatment, and community interventions, yet many have been abandoned.

The continued delay in appointing a new Central Drug Authority Board has contributed to stagnation in implementing the National Drug Master Plan and coordinating a comprehensive response to the substance abuse crisis.

While other commemorative days rightly receive widespread recognition and government support, the day dedicated to addressing drug abuse and illicit trafficking continues to pass with little public attention or meaningful action, despite the devastating impact substance abuse has on communities across South Africa.

ActionSA believes that addressing substance abuse requires a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach, including properly funding Local Drug Action Committees. We renew our call for urgent, coordinated action to address substance abuse and restore hope to communities across our country.
