ActionSA extends our sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims of the tragic building collapse in George, which has claimed the lives of 7 people, with 39 others who remain unaccounted for as rescue efforts intensify.
We applaud the remarkable effort dedicated to safely rescuing the remaining contractors and will keep them and their families in our thoughts and prayers during this time.
While we acknowledge the sensitivity of the matter, it is apparent that this tragedy has raised numerous questions surrounding the circumstances, particularly concerning compliance that led to the collapse. Therefore, ActionSA calls for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances.
As reports indicate, questions related to the contractors’ compliance and registration with relevant regulatory bodies, as well as the legal status of the contracted workers, including building permits and on-site safety management, are critical questions that must be urgently addressed.
ActionSA will be monitoring the progress to ensure that we get to the bottom of this tragedy and that we ensure accountability and justice for the victims of this grave tragedy.
