ActionSA, on Tuesday morning, laid corruption charges against City of Johannesburg Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Economic Development, Nomoya Mnisi, for allegedly directing the former Joburg Property Company (JPC) Acting CFO, Sipho Mzobe, to make an illicit payment to the ANC Youth League.
It is alleged that MMC Mnisi directed Mzobe to settle an invoice for an amount close to a million rand to the ANC Youth League in Johannesburg, and ActionSA commends the former CFO who boldly refused to abide by this highly irregular request.
It is further alleged that the MMC stalled the appointment of a permanent CFO to ensure that her preferred candidate could occupy the position and thus carry out these dubious requests.
As a party which stands for the rule of law and ethical leadership, ActionSA believes that MMC Mnisi should be held accountable for the irregular instruction.
These allegations further support our view that the ANC-EFF have always sought to gain access to the city’s coffers in order to enrich themselves and their political parties ahead of the 2024 elections.
The allegations also support our view that it is imperative that the coalition of doom and its puppet Executive Mayor, Kabelo Gwamanda, need to be removed to ensure that ratepayer rands are not abused for personal gain.
The JPC has long been plagued by poor management and corruption, with the work done under the multi-party government which includes ActionSA being reversed. It has been reported that JPC Board members have now started secretly recording their meetings and sending the information to the MMC.
ActionSA will continue to monitor investigations into the MMC and pursue all avenues, including through motions in council, to ensure that accountability is achieved.
As a constructive opposition, we will keep the ANC-EFF coalition accountable to ensure that the needs of residents are always placed first.
