ActionSA confirms that it will oppose the motions of no confidence against the Executive Mayor and the Speaker of Council that are due to be debated in the Ekurhuleni Council at its Ordinary Council meeting on 24 April 2025.
These motions, tabled by the Democratic Alliance and one of the smaller parties, have been brought without any consultation with ActionSA or the presentation of a viable alternative to reconstitute government in the event of their success.
As a constructive opposition party in Ekurhuleni, ActionSA remains committed to stability, good governance, and service delivery. We believe that motions of no confidence must not be used as reckless instruments of political theatre, especially in a municipality already grappling with governance challenges and financial strain.
Where parties seek to change leadership, they must do so with a clear and credible plan for a new administration. At this stage, no such proposal has been made available to ActionSA, nor has there been any indication of a coalition agreement, proposed leadership, or framework to improve governance outcomes.
Our decision is also consistent with ActionSA’s principled approach to multiparty cooperation in Gauteng. In both Tshwane and Johannesburg, ActionSA is working with the ANC and EFF to stabilise municipalities through shared governance roles. We have publicly indicated our willingness to support a similar stabilisation effort in Ekurhuleni, should such an initiative be formally tabled.
We will not be part of actions that seek to disrupt for disruption’s sake. Residents of Ekurhuleni deserve certainty, leadership, and focused delivery – not political gamesmanship that deepens dysfunction.
ActionSA remains open to engaging in future discussions about governance in Ekurhuleni, provided they are grounded in integrity, planning, and a genuine commitment to fixing the municipality.
