ActionSA Pleased by Decision to Halt Progress in Sandton Drive Renaming
Funzi Ngobeni MPL
ActionSA Gauteng Provincial Chairperson
ActionSA is pleased to report that the political management committee of the Government of Local Unity in the City of Johannesburg has agreed to halt implementation of the council resolution pending a process to find consensus on the matter.
ActionSA has been vocal on this matter due to our position to focus on the improvement of the road network rather than the renaming of it and the need to avoid polarising communities with proposals that should be used to celebrate the plethora of South African artists, poets and sportsmen and women worthy of recognition.
The realities of local government in Johannesburg are stark and too many residents and communities have experienced a declining level of service delivery and infrastructure stability. This and not the renaming of non-offensive street names must be the priority and focus of the municipality.
ActionSA is equally committed to the principle of working with other political parties in Johannesburg to achieve positive outcomes for its residents. Our involvement exclusively in the legislature, and not as a formal coalition partner of the GNU, allows us to be constructive in our approach. This is why ActionSA will work to find consensus on this matter in a way that the original resolution to rename Sandton Drive did not.
ActionSA is pleased by this positive development and is clear that any efforts to proceed on implementing the original council resolution will result in ActionSA working with like-minded parties to bring its own motion to rescind the council resolution to rename Sandton Drive. Accordingly, ActionSA will not support a motion by the Freedom Front Plus to rescind the original council resolution until such time as this process of consensus building is concluded.
