ActionSA Raises Concern Over Malfunctioning Traffic Lights in Gauteng
Emma More MPL
ActionSA Member of the Roads and Transport Portfolio Committee in the Gauteng Legislature
ActionSA is deeply concerned about the increasing number of traffic lights that are not functioning across the province of Gauteng both in municipal and provincial roads. Over 150 traffic lights across the province are currently non-operational as of the last audit by the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport. This issue has significantly impacted on the daily lives of Gauteng residents, leading to frustration and safety hazards, particularly during peak hours.
The University of Johannesburg have estimated that the malfunctioning traffic lights in Gauteng are costing our residents approximately 37 minutes of their time each day. This translates into an annual financial loss of R26,000 per person, simply due to being stuck in traffic. This issue is deeply concerning, especially during these challenging economic times when every minute and cent matters for the people of our province.
The safety and well-being of Gauteng’s residents are paramount, and it is unacceptable that such a critical issue has been allowed to persist. ActionSA will initiate a process to hold the provincial government and all municipalities accountable for this pressing matter. We demand immediate action to rectify the situation and ensure that all traffic lights are fully operational.
ActionSA will write and petition all relevant departments and municipalities on this issue to ensure that they take action and keep our roads safe and operational. The current state of affairs cannot continue, as it poses a serious risk to the public and hampers the efficient movement of cars on our roads.
ActionSA is committed to ensuring that the people of Gauteng can travel safely and efficiently. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and hold those responsible accountable. It is time for decisive action to address this issue and restore order to our roads.
