ActionSA continues to stand in solidarity with the families of the Lily Mine victims, echoing the concerns raised by ActionSA President, Herman Mashaba in his recent statement. The heartbreaking and unresolved situation surrounding the collapse of the Lily Mine, which claimed the lives of three innocent workers – Pretty Nkambule, Yvonne Mnisi, and Solomon Nyirenda – continues to be a painful reminder of the systemic failures in our mining industry.
In pursuit of justice, ActionSA has formally submitted the following questions to the Premier for oral response:
Following the collapse of Lily Mine on the 5th of February 2016 resulting in the deaths of Pretty Nkambule, Yvonne Mnisi and Solomon Nyirenda and the subsequent closure of the mine, the family of the victims and the community have been left without justice or support:
Does the Mpumalanga Government have any plans to assist the families of the victims in their search for justice, and support the community impacted by the mine’s closure?
If so, what assistance will be given?
These questions reflect the deep concern that, in the face of this national tragedy, the families of the victims have been left without the necessary support from government institutions. We demand that the Mpumalanga Government provide clear answers and tangible answers that demonstrate their commitment to justice for these families.
As a representative of ActionSA, I fully support Herman Mashaba’s call for criminal prosecution and echo the party’s intent to pursue private prosecution if the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) fails to act. It is unconscionable that, after all these years, there has been no meaningful progress. ActionSA stands resolute in our fight for the reopening of the mine shaft and ensuring that those responsible for this catastrophe face the full force of the law.
The government’s response to our submitted questions will serve as a critical test of their willingness to right these wrongs. The time for empty promises has passed – decisive action is now needed to bring closure to the grieving families and restore faith in our justice system.
ActionSA will continue to fight alongside the victims’ families, ensuring that their suffering is not in vain, and that the Lily Mine tragedy is never forgotten.
Pretty Nkambule, Yvonne Mnisi, and Solomon Nyirenda – These are names that will not be forgotten, these are lives that we will relentlessly fight for, we will not rest until they get the justice they deserve, and their families can put this agonising chapter of their lives to rest.
Together, we can push for the justice that these families have been denied for far too long.
