ActionSA Supports the Bethlehem Community March Against Drug Abuse
Patricia Kopane
ActionSA Free State Provincial Chairperson
Bohlokong Community in Bethlehem, Free State has embarked on a march to highlight the scourge of substance abuse amongst young people in their community.
The prevalence in the use of drugs such as dagga, heroine, tik and nyaope has contributed to the significant increase in crime, mental illness and low education statistics in this community.
ActionSA is of the view that schools should be places of learning, free from drugs where learners feel safe and communities should be free from drugs.
ActionSA demands the following from SAPS:
The introduction of specialised police units to deal with crimes – in particular the Narcotics Unit, to deal with drugs and drug-related crimes.
Visible policing around schools and communities to deter drug dealers from attempting to sell illicit substances to young people.
More frequent unannounced raids, of drug den facilities, where it is suspected that drugs are being traded.
Proper investigations into police officers who are accused of colluding with drug dealers in our communities.
Young people are the victims of drugs and are used by the unscrupulous traders masquerading as business people whilst destroying the future of the young South Africans.
ActionSA remains resolute in the fight against substance abuse.
