ActionSA Tables Motion on Urgent Debate for Malfunctioning Traffic Lights and Deteriorating Infrastructure

ActionSA has tabled a motion in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature to urgently address the pressing issue of malfunctioning traffic lights and deteriorating road infrastructure in the province.

ActionSA’s motion follows our oversight of both provincial and municipal roads, where we observed severe traffic congestion in Gauteng caused by dysfunctional traffic lights and deteriorating infrastructure. We have also flagged key roads in the province that have become hijacking hotspots due to non-functioning traffic lights and streetlights.

These malfunctions and infrastructure issues pose severe risks to public safety, disrupt traffic flow, and significantly diminish the quality of life for our residents. The ongoing failures by both the local municipalities and provincial government to ensure the proper maintenance and functioning of our traffic lights, streetlights and road infrastructure is unacceptable and requires urgent intervention.

This motion seeks to urgently address the following key concerns:
– The frequent and prolonged malfunctions of traffic lights, leading to severe traffic congestion, accidents, and heightened risk to road users.
– The deteriorating condition of streetlights, which compromises safety, particularly during nighttime.
– The alarming state of road infrastructure, negatively impacting transportation efficiency and economic activities.

ActionSA has tabled this motion for an urgent debate in the Legislature not only to hold the MEC of Roads and Transport accountable but also to pass a resolution by the House requesting the following actions:
– The MEC of Roads and Transport must present an immediate and comprehensive plan to address the issues of malfunctioning traffic lights and deteriorating road infrastructure.
– The MEC of Co-operative Governance must urgently outline the measures taken to ensure local municipalities comply with maintenance standards and are held accountable for road infrastructure and the timeline for all repairs.
– Both MECs must commit to an expedited timeline for the implementation of these plans and provide regular, transparent updates to this House on the progress made.

ActionSA remains committed to the development and maintenance of infrastructure to better serve the residents and will ensure that this urgent debate will lead to better road infrastructure services for the residents of the province, an increase in safety and smoother traffic flow in Gauteng.
