ActionSA has nominated its Joburg Caucus Leader, Cllr Nobuhle Mthembu, for the position of the City of Johannesburg Council Speaker.
An experienced, dedicated, and ardent advocate of accountability and transparency, Cllr Mthembu has been at the forefront of championing the interests of Johannesburg residents during her term in Council, qualities that we believe make her an ideal candidate for the role of Speaker.
From exposing the administrative inefficiencies that led to the tragic Usindiso fire, which claimed more than 77 lives, to addressing the mismanagement of the Bree explosion, tackling the water crisis, poor service delivery, and the lack of political will in addressing decline of the Inner City, Cllr Mthembu’s commitment and track-record in protecting the best interests of Johannesburg residents is unimpeachable. Cllr Mthembu has also been at the forefront of fighting for the reversal of the ill-conceived R200 surcharge imposed on the already overstretched residents of the city.
Crucially, as ActionSA’s Caucus Leader, Councillor Mthembu has not only highlighted the numerous issues affecting the City’s ability to govern effectively but has also consistently made a deliberate effort to propose necessary solutions to get the City back on track.
Cllr Mthembu holds a BCom degree in Taxation and has been a member of the Council’s Section 79 Committee on Human Settlements. In every role she has occupied, she has proven to be solution-driven, with a commitment to integrity and efficiency at every turn.
ActionSA has communicated its intention to be a constructive voice on behalf of the best interests of residents, fully recognising that they demand of their representatives to make every effort towards stabilising governance and ensuring effective frontline service delivery. Should the GLU not support her nomination we will continue our work to be a watchdog over this administration. ActionSA is not concerned with lofty positions but rather how this strategic office can be leveraged to putting the city back on track.
ActionSA believes that Cllr Mthembu’s unwavering commitment to accountability, transparency, and maximising efficiency, along with her proven leadership skills, dedication to public service, and ability to drive meaningful change, will undoubtedly contribute to achieving these goals and improving the state of governance and service in the City of Johannesburg.
