ActionSA to Inspect Non-compliant & Unregistered Informal Businesses Selling Counterfeit Goods

ActionSA has already taken to the streets of numerous communities in Gauteng and engaged with the appropriate authorities to undertake inspections at unregistered informal shops in light of the recent death caused by the sale and consumption of counterfeit goods.

Tomorrow, Tuesday 24 October 2024, our MMCs in the City of Tshwane will oversee a joint supervision operation at spaza shops in Soshanguve and Hammanskraal in conjunction with the police, health and food inspectors, and enforcement of bylaws and spatial planning.

Additionally, ActionSA Lesedi Regional Chairperson, Webster Kutoane, and the station commander will meet on Wednesday to discuss the number of unlicensed businesses in the area, their compliance with laws, and how many of them have undergone inspection.

This engagement follows the oversight visit conducted by Kutoane on Sunday with the assistance of the police and crime prevention wardens.

However, it is only the beginning. Our members and volunteers have planned further engagements around the province to ensure that the law is applied and the government intervenes.

It is devastatingly sad that we have reached this stage as a result of years of government neglect and inability to, not only enforce law and order, but provide access to economic opportunities and dignified living conditions.

Due to the oppressive cost-of-living crisis in this country, millions of people in the province struggle to make ends meet and afford goods from even the cheapest of our retailers resulting in the proliferation of spaza shops selling counterfeit goods.

The challenge, however, with some of them, is their non-compliance with regulations, which has endangered the lives of those who buy from them.

We demand that local municipality health inspectors, the department of trade and industry, the home affairs department, and police all come to the table to arrest the loss of life.

ActionSA encourages the implementation of resources and institutions that would economically and financially empower all South Africans, equipping them with the tools to improve their lives.

We also advocate for the funding of entrepreneurial endeavours of South Africans through, among other things, establishing government-backed, low-interest loans for SMMEs at private financial institutions.

The rule of law has to be unapologetically applied to ensure communities are kept safe, regulations are followed, and those found guilty of endangering the lives of residents be held accountable without fail.
