ActionSA will join the community of Riverlea, Johannesburg, to handover a memorandum to the Langlaagte Police Station next week Monday, 07 August 2023, to demand action over the trauma caused by Zama-Zamas in the community.
The community of Riverlea has been caught in the crossfire of feuding groups of illegal miners, colloquially known as Zama-Zamas, and ActionSA believes that drastic action needs to be taken to ensure that the rule of law is restored in the community without further delay.
The ANC government has simply failed to effectively police our communities, leading to the rise of criminal syndicates that rule our communities in fear and terror.
ActionSA has long called for action to be taken in Riverlea, with our President, Herman Mashaba, writing to Home Affairs Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, and Mineral Resources and Energy Minister, Gwede Mantashe, in May to ask for their immediate intervention.
We will, therefore, join the community of Riverlea in asking law enforcement:
- What arrests have been made since the current spate of killings in the community;
- What visibility plans are in place to ensure residents feel safe; and
- What action will be taken against individuals who hold no paperwork to be in the country?
On Thursday, 03 August 2023, ActionSA will also be marching to Police Minister, Bheki Cele, in Tshwane to demand improvements to police stations across the country that have left communities defenceless, including the community of Riverlea.
As a party which stands for the rule of law, ActionSA will continue to work with all stakeholders to improve policing to ensure that residents can once again feel safe in their homes and communities.
