ActionSA notes yet another mealy-mouthed response from Minister Gwede Mantashe on the matter of retrieving the bodies of the Lily Mine victims. Once again, the Minister hides behind every conceivable excuse instead of providing answers or decisive action to retrieve the bodies of Solomon Nyirenda, Pretty Nkambule, and Yvonne Mnisi entombed underground for almost a decade now.
This prevarication is simply unacceptable considering that the GNU government spent in excess of R100 million recovering the bodies of illegal immigrant miners (zama zama’s) yet Minister Mantashe refuses to lift a finger to retrieve the bodies of these three legitimate SA miners.
The question remains, and it cannot be evaded, “When will the bodies of the Lily Mine Three finally be retrieved, Minister?”
The hypocrisy in regard to the plight of the deceased miners families who remain camped outside the mine in unimaginable circumstances is staggering, the cruelty shameful, and the ANC and now GNU government moral bankruptcy is complete.
For nearly a decade, successive premiers, ministers, business rescue practitioners and mine owners have lied and broken every promise to these grieving families while illegal mining by zama zama’s continues at Lily Mine under their watch.
In August, ActionSA wrote to President Ramaphosa. No response. In May, we wrote to Minister Mantashe. No response. It is only when forced in Parliament that they even pretend to care saying the bodies will be retrieved but offering nothing but legalese, delay, and evasion.
Unlike ANC leaders who only arrive for cameras, ActionSA and President Herman Mashaba have been fighting for justice and dignity for these families since 2020 and we will continue pursuing every available avenue to get Minister Mantashe and his department to do the right thing and retrieve the remains of the deceased.
