ActionSA to Report R4.5 Million Annual Beauty Contest to the Hawks and Auditor-General
Thoko Mashiane
ActionSA Mpumalanga Provincial Chairperson
The Miss Mpumalanga Beauty Contest has been embroiled in allegations of corruption to the tune of R4.5 million every year for the past 12 years which would amount to a total in excess of R50 million.
The Mpumalanga Economic Regulator (MER) has been consistently awarding a contract to one company only – Mzimari Productions – allegedly without going out on a fair and transparent tender process.
The company has been enjoying protection from ANC politicians in the Province and the Economic Regulator has been the host of the Miss Mpumalanga Beauty Contest since 2011.
ActionSA lawyers will, this week, be in contact with the Hawks and the Auditor-General of South Africa (A-G) to investigate the dodgy tender of Miss Mpumalanga that has been awarded to Mzimari Productions without any bidding process in contravention of legislative prescripts governing public funds.
The MER’s main objective is to regulate the gambling and liquor industries in the province in terms of the relevant legislation; not the hosting of beauty contests for the enrichment of a single company for 12 years.
Further to this, the MER has not followed the relevant legislation in terms of Treasury Regulations, the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) and the Supply Chain Management Act.
ActionSA wants the relevant law enforcement agencies and the A-G to investigate whether there is a comprehensive and relevant project feasibility study that has established a clear business case for the award of the beauty contest tender.
Managers, CEO’s and board members that are complicit in the award of this allegedly corrupt tender need to face consequences and should be jailed if the investigations confirm their alleged incompetence and complicity as far as the waste of taxpayers’ money is concerned.
For too long, unethical and criminal behaviour has been allowed in this country. ActionSA has declared corruption as Public Enemy Number One and we will not allow the corrupt to sabotage our people’s hopes of progress.
