ActionSA to Table Ground-Breaking Motion to Strengthen Legislative Oversight and Accountability in Gauteng

As part of ActionSA’s unwavering commitment to advancing accountability, transparency and good governance, we will be introducing a ground-breaking motion in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature that guarantees the oversight authority of Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs). This motion will seek to guarantee that the Executive is held accountable for its actions and that Gauteng residents receive the services our constitution entitles them to. This move is critical for improved oversight and accountability throughout Gauteng Province.

On Monday, 22 October 2024, a Member of the Executive refused not only MPLs to exercise their constitutional mandate of unannounced oversight visits, but also attempted to prevent Gauteng SCOPA Committee from doing an unannounced oversight visit to the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital on Thursday, 17 October 2024. This motion seeks to remove any doubt or misinterpretation of Sections 114(2)(b) and 113 of the Constitution of South Africa and to enforce the mandate thereof.

ActionSA’s motion emphasises the importance of comprehensive oversight by MPLs and Portfolio Committees, through both announced and unannounced visits, to provincial departments and provincial organs of state. Oversight visits will enable MPLs to review the quality of services provided, with efficiency and impartiality, and determine whether they fulfil the criteria established by law and policy frameworks

ActionSA is confident that the motion will not only strengthen the Legislature’s role in holding the Executive accountable, but will also increase confidence between the government and the people it serves. With this motion, the focus remains on providing better services, enhancing quickness, and preserving the rule of law in Gauteng.

As a party founded on servant leadership, ActionSA is committed to ensuring that government institutions are open, responsive, and in the best interests of people. This motion is a critical step towards that goal, and ActionSA urges all political parties in the Legislature to support it, in the interest of promoting Gauteng Province’s democratic principles.
