Yesterday, Tuesday 24 October 2023, I and ActionSA’s Tshwane Caucus joined officials of the city to conduct a Spazashop Oversight in Soshanguve (Tshwane Region 1). Part of the operation was to check the legality of all spazashop operations and their compliance with the City’s by-laws.
This comes after several people, including children, died after having consumed counterfeit products alleged to have been purchased at spazashops in the nation’s capital.
ActionSA wishes to, again, extend its deepest condolences to families who lost loved ones as a result of consuming counterfeit goods.
It should be noted that in the last three (3) months alone, Tshwane has experienced one of the worst food poisoning incidents which adversely affected over 240 pupils from different primary schools across Region 1.
During this operation, several spazashops were found to not be compliant with the bylaws of the City as they did not have the required operating licences. Two (2) arrests were made by the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Over the past few years, Soshanguve has been turned into a den of lawlessness where criminals do as they please without any police intervention. Crime statistics in the area have spiralled out of control and it would appear that there is no political will to make sure this is corrected.
Yesterday’s observations bore testament to that harrowing fact.
Furthermore, a police escort, who left Rietgat Police Station in the morning to accompany ActionSA Councillors and city officials as they conducted oversight, did not pitch where they were supposed to. ActionSA Caucus was therefore compelled to physically go to the police station to demand the services of SAPS.
As part of our governance strategy within the Multi-party Coalition, we will make sure the Rule of Law in the City is restored and that small businesses operate within the prescripts of the City’s by-laws.
The Community of Block Y (Jukulyn) in Soshanguve, welcomed ActionSA’s intervention.
We will also diligently ensure that we follow-up on the 2 arrests that were made to hold SAPS accountable.
