ActionSA Tshwane Tables Motion to Investigate Integration of Power Supply of Former Homelands

ActionSA submitted a motion to the office of the Speaker in the City of Tshwane to investigate whether the municipality can take over the supply of electricity to former homeland areas located within the city.

Eskom remained the direct supplier of a number of former homeland areas within the City of Tshwane – decades since the dawn of democracy – which has led declining levels of electricity provision.

Electricity outages can take days to resolve with little to no communication from Eskom officials, while at the same time allegations has grown that corrupt officials intentionally sabotage substations.

ActionSA believes that if the city takes over electricity provision to these areas, officials can be held more accountable, revenue collection can be monitored, and the delivery of electricity can be improved.

Due to the rolling black outs, former homeland communities are already battling a rise in unemployment while water supply has also become constrained due to pump stations being unable to operate. The situation cannot continue.

Electricity provision is a basic human need, and that is why ActionSA is advocating that a solution to the issue be found to improve the lives of residents living in those communities.

As a party committed to social justice, ActionSA will work hard to ensure that the former homeland regions receive the services they deserve and that they are no longer forgotten by an uncaring government.
