ActionSA Urges Ekurhuleni Mayor to Utilise ActionSA Model for Joint Operation in Ekurhuleni

ActionSA cautiously welcomes City of Ekurhuleni Mayor Cllr Xhakaza’s announcement of a joint operation launched yesterday in Tembisa, to improve community safety and to bring back the rule of law.

We urge Mayor Xhakaza to utilise ActionSA’s model of ‘Buya Mthetho’ or ‘Boots on the Ground’, which involves a multidisciplinary approach to problems of lawlessness plaguing our communities.

At the centre of this model is a belief that local law enforcement cannot fold its arms in the face of rampant lawlessness that leads to massive loss of revenue for our cities through illegal electricity connections, hijacked buildings and spaza shops that continue operating illegally.

During our time in government in the City of Johannesburg and the City of Ekurhuleni, ‘Buya Mthetho’ took a tough stance on illegal connections, hijacked buildings, expired and counterfeit goods being sold by informal traders and illegal hawkers.

With South Africa’s porous borders, problems related to undocumented migrants have fallen on local law enforcement, who we believe can provide a solid platform for restoring law and order to inner cities and townships.

We therefore offer Mayor Xhakaza our support in his efforts to improve law and order in Ekurhuleni, as long as his commitment to this cause is ongoing and not a PR stunt.

As a constructive opposition in Ekurhuleni, we will continue to hold the executive to account where we believe it is failing, but will not hinder efforts to improve community safety and bring back the rule of law.
