ActionSA Vindicated as SAHRC Report Reveals That Limpopo Government Has Violated the Rights of its People

ActionSA welcomes the recent report from the South African Human Rights Commission of its Inquiry into Access to Water and the Efficacy of Water Services Authorities within the Limpopo Province.

The report reveals that the Limpopo government has grossly violated the rights of the people in the province to access sufficient basic water supply.

In a letter dated 22 March 2023 by our Provincial Secretary, Kgoshi Letsiri Phaahla, addressed to the Sekhukhune District Mayor, he lamented the denial of access to basic services and Water provision in the region despite the region being a Water Supply Authority and being surrounded by several water sources.

The Inquiry cites, “all major dams in Limpopo were more than 90% full. Yet, many communities were not receiving clean drinking water. This clearly demonstrates that the failures of Municipalities to provide water may not be attributed to the shortage of water in Limpopo.”

This vindicates our position as ActionSA and clearly shows that our call for government to heed the water supply challenges throughout the province have been deliberately snubbed by Premier Stan Mathabatha’s Administration. The failure of the Provincial Government to hold municipal authorities accountable has gone on for too long while the plight of the rural poor in Giyani, Dialopeng, Moletjie, Mahwelereng and various other places in that in the province, remains unheeded.

For months, ActionSA has been dedicated to advancing the cause of water supply shortages in this province and we are hopeful that the report will end the gross neglect of rural communities. In its recommendations, municipalities around the province are expected to provide the commission with a detailed plan with timeframes within three months. Failing which, serious action will be taken by the commission.
