ActionSA Welcomes Arrest of 4 Suspects Linked to SA Express Tender Corruption
Kwena Mangope
ActionSA North-West Provincial Chairperson
ActionSA welcomes the news of the arrest of four suspects charged in the Molopo Magistrates’ Court over dubious multimillion-rand SA Express contract.
Tebogo van Wyk, Nothando Dube, Sipho Levy Phiri and Thabang Mohlokoleng were charged with 34 counts ranging from fraud, corruption, money laundering and contravening the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA). The four were arrested by the North-West Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation Unit in Gauteng and Mahikeng.
ActionSA is pleased to see progress in this regard considering that this has been an issue we raised repeatedly since the release of the Zondo Commission report. The commission found that an SA Express contract worth R400 million was riddled with procurement irregularities and money was paid for services not rendered.
We condemn, in the strongest terms possible, the actions of these tenderpreneurs and, in particular, the North-West Provincial Government officials who flouted proper supply chain management processes, enabled and possibly benefitted from these illegal activities at the expense of the residents of our province.
We remain cautiously optimistic that more arrests will come and that all individuals involved in State Capture in the North-West province will be arrested, incarcerated and their assets seized to recoup the money that has been stolen from South Africans.
We also call on the ANC in North-West not to interfere in ongoing processes.
ActionSA commits to follow this case closely and also calls on all organs of state to be accountable.
