ActionSA Welcomes Gauteng Crime Reduction, Calls for More Resources to Combat Crimes on the Increase

Following the meeting of the Gauteng Community Safety Portfolio Committee, ActionSA welcomes the 6% reduction in crime in the province. We are, however, deeply concerned about insufficient resources available to frontline workers to help them fight crime and urge the provincial government to capacitate these vital cogs in crime prevention.

ActionSA applauds law enforcement agencies in reducing contact crimes and sexual assault cases, including rape. We also commend the strides made in tackling illegal mining operations and the recovery of illegal firearms as well as the successes of the Gang Unit to apprehend drug kingpins.

Though their primary mandate is to deal with traffic and by-laws enforcement, the Cities’ Metro police have played a pivotal role by in combatting crime and deserve their roses.

We look forward to the collaboration between the Metro Police and SAPS across different jurisdictions, as was announced by the Premier during his SOPA, as we believe that this will help intensify crime fighting in a coordinated manner.

Critically, ActionSA implores Gauteng government to capacitate law enforcement agencies with resources that will enable them to dispose of their responsibilities optimally.

Shortages of vehicles to patrol or respond to crime timeously and lack of stationery or desks and computers thwarts the efforts that officers put in to combat and solve crimes.

As a party committed to the rule of law, ActionSA urges Premier Lesufi, the Community Safety MEC and the Provincial Commissioner to implement resolutions taken to help reduce crime even further, and not just pay lip service to addressing the atrocities that Gauteng residents have to contend with.

ActionSA will hold the Executive and officials accountable on their promises to curb crime in our province.
