ActionSA welcomes the recent statement by the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Dr. Zweli Mkhize, commending the City of Tshwane’s remarkable financial turnaround.
This recognition is a clear endorsement of the leadership of ActionSA Executive Mayor, Dr. Nasiphi Moya, and the decisive steps her administration has taken over the past 175 days to restore financial stability, rebuild public trust, and improve service delivery.
Under Mayor Moya’s leadership, Tshwane has:
– Paid R1 billion towards its Eskom debt, reducing it from R6.7 billion to R5.66 billion.
– Fully settled the R4.7 billion VAT debt related to the defunct PEU smart meter contract.
– Presented its first fully funded budget in over three years.
– Slashed its debtor’s book by more than R4 billion, from R30 billion to R25.69 billion, through intensified revenue collection and a council-approved debt relief programme.
– Written off R2.42 billion in debt from registered indigent accounts and cleared R1.83 billion from over 31,500 inactive accounts.
The positive trajectory we’re seeing in Tshwane is no accident. It is the result of deliberate planning, dedicated implementation, and rigorous monitoring and evaluation. These achievements reflect a decisive shift from the instability and mismanagement of the past, and show what is possible when ethical, competent, and people-centred leadership is in place.
The coalition of progressive parties, namely the ANC, EFF, ActionSA, ACDP, AIC, DOP, PA, PAC, ATM, and GOOD is proving what’s possible when we put South Africans first and prioritise action over endless talk. This is what good governance looks like: a responsive, responsible administration focused on delivering results.
As ActionSA, we are proud of Mayor Moya’s bold and deliberate leadership, which is restoring confidence in the ability of local government to serve the people. We remain committed to building on this positive trajectory and to working tirelessly to ensure that the residents of Tshwane see the results of good governance in their daily lives.
Tshwane is becoming the blueprint for effective, ethical, and people-first municipal governance in South Africa.
