ActionSA Welcomes President Ramaphosa’s Authorisation of Investigation into Corruption at KwaDukuza Municipality
Press Statement by Nel Sewraj
ActionSA KwaDukuza Caucus Leader
ActionSA welcomes the long-overdue authorisation by President Cyril Ramaphosa for an investigation into major tenders from 2018 and 2019 at the corruption-stricken KwaDukuza Municipality.
These include a road rehabilitation contract and electricity supply contracts that have been flagged for irregularities by a whistle-blower.
We strongly suspect that Tender MN132/2018: Panel of contractors for road rehabilitation (36-month contract), flagged proclamation issued under the Special Investigating Units and Special Tribunals Act, 1996 (Act No. 74 of 1996).
KwaDukuza Municipality has been plagued by instability and mismanagement in recent years, operating on autopilot while municipal officials and leadership acted with impunity.
This lack of accountability has allowed corruption to thrive, eroding public trust and undermining service delivery.
We believe that this investigation will begin to uncover the deep rot within the Municipality and bring to light those responsible for mismanaging public funds.
Holding the perpetrators accountable is a critical step towards restoring good governance and ensuring that municipal resources are used to serve the people, not personal interests.
ActionSA views this as the first step towards sending a strong message to municipal officials and leaders that public funds and tender processes cannot be treated as opportunities for lawlessness.
Accountability must be the cornerstone of any government committed to ethical leadership and service delivery.
We urge the investigation to be thorough, transparent, and free from political interference.
