ActionSA Welcomes Progress in Resolving Disastrous State of KwaThema Police Station Following Our Oversight Visit
Dereleen James MP
ActionSA Member of Parliament
ActionSA welcomes the steady progress being made in addressing the extensive issues affecting the KwaThema Police Station in Ekurhuleni, following ActionSA’s oversight visit, which revealed a derelict and under-resourced station in a state of disrepair resembling an apocalyptic scene.
On Wednesday, before Parliament’s Police Portfolio Committee, the SAPS National Commissioner and the Deputy Director General at the Public Works Department indicated that several meetings had been held between SAPS and Public Works to address the dire state of the station which ActionSA exposed.
In acknowledgment of the fact that these meetings were prompted by the unannounced oversight visit conducted by ActionSA in late October, the Police National Commissioner provided assurance that the matter is receiving the full attention of the Police’s top brass and that engagements with relevant stakeholders are ongoing.
Importantly, a key aspect of the dilapidated state of the station was that the property is owned by the City of Ekurhuleni, and recently, the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure indicated that they have written to the Ekurhuleni City Manager and the matter is now to be tabled in council to facilitate the transfer of the property, thereby enabling the necessary refurbishments and upgrades.
ActionSA is encouraged by the positive response to our demonstrated commitment to restoring the rule of law, beginning with ensuring that our men and women in blue are equipped with the necessary resources to carry out their duties effectively.
