ActionSA Welcomes Progress on Hijacked Buildings in Ekurhuleni

ActionSA welcomes efforts by the new MMC for Finance in Ekurhuleni, Cllr Dhabathi, on finally implementing some of the recommendations on ActionSA’s motion on hijacked buildings in Ekurhuleni.

Last Friday 2 August, MMC Dlabathi announced raids on hijacked buildings in Germiston, some of which are within walking distance of the mayor’s office. MMC Dlabathi rightly announced this new program of action as part of efforts to stabilise the City’s finances.

Since taking office in 2021, ActionSA has consistently argued that hijacked buildings are a key contributor to water and electricity losses in Ekurhuleni, which significantly strain our already constrained finances.

Retaking hijacked buildings, renovating them, and allowing the private sector to convert them into affordable housing is a key priority for ActionSA, with Herman Mashaba’s tenure in Johannesburg demonstrating that this policy is implementable with sufficient political will.

ActionSA has been frustrated with the lack of progress in this regard in Ekurhuleni, after we successfully passed a motion that outlined a clear path to get this done in October 2022. Part of the recommendations called for a steering committee for hijacked buildings that would involve key political heads in the city to be convened. Regrettably, this is yet to be implemented.

Although we welcome MMC Dlabathi’s efforts so far, we urge him and the ANC executive to seriously begin implementing the 2022 motion’s recommendations. ActionSA has also insisted that one of our councillor’s form part of the steering committee, to provide oversight and help drive this important issue.

As a constructive opposition in Ekurhuleni, ActionSA will continue to use our representation in Council to deliver on our manifesto priorities and best serve the residents.
