ActionSA Welcomes Removal of Mohokare Municipality Mayor

ActionSA welcomes the removal of Zingisa Mgawuli as the Mayor of the Mohokare Municipality, a long-overdue decision following our relentless fight against the ANC’s failed leadership in the region. This development comes years after the municipality’s continued failure to provide basic services such as water and sanitation, which have devastated the lives of residents in Jagersfontein, Trompsburg, and Fauresmith.

The crisis in Mohokare is a direct result of the ANC’s mismanagement and lack of accountability. The municipality’s debt of over R600 million to Bloem Water has led to a severe water shortage, forcing residents to rely on Jojo tanks and pay exorbitant water prices. This has caused business closures and a decline in economic opportunities in the area.

Furthermore, the Jagersfontein hospital is on the brink of collapse, dependent on Jojo tanks for its water supply. This is unacceptable and a violation of residents’ constitutional right to basic services, as outlined in Chapter 2 of the Constitution.

The situation has been further compounded by the municipality’s failure to pay employee salaries for the past two months. This has led to workers downing tools and has exacerbated the crisis in service delivery. Workers at the municipality, along with residents, have repeatedly called for the removal of the mayor and Acting Municipal Manager, Timothy Makgajane, whose neglect and mismanagement have contributed to the ongoing crisis.

While the ANC in the Free State has claimed the decision to remove the mayor was based on service delivery considerations, we see this as a reaction to years of discontent, protests, and widespread calls for accountability. ANC Free State spokesperson, Thabo Meeko, stated that the removal will be carefully implemented to avoid further instability. However, the real question is: how much longer will the ANC allow this instability to persist before addressing the root causes?

ActionSA has consistently highlighted these issues and will continue to fight for the rights of Mohokare residents. We will not rest until the municipality is run efficiently, and the people of Mohokare receive the services they deserve. This is just the beginning of our fight for proper governance and accountability in Mohokare.
