ActionSA Welcomes Surveillance Technology for Strengthening South Africa’s Border Security

ActionSA cautiously welcomes the Border Management Authority’s use of modern surveillance technology to monitor cross-border movements during the festive season, representing a vital step towards the much-needed strengthening of South Africa’s porous borders.

In recognising the crisis affecting South Africa’s borders, ActionSA is pleased that the Border Management Authority has acquired key technologies such as drones, as announced by former Minister Aaron Motsoaledi in April this year and unveiled by Minister Schreiber yesterday, innovations we believe will significantly aid in combatting the criminal invasion of South Africa’s borders.

Importantly, recognising the significance of the initiative to modernise South Africa’s border security, ActionSA will be submitting a series of critical questions about the initiative to ascertain that, beyond procuring the tools, the Border Management Authority has the managerial, technical, and staffing capacity to ensure the effective and sustainable use of the technology.

The effectiveness of the newly procured tools lies in both the skilled personnel employed to monitor high-risk zones and the further integration with the already dangerously limited ground-based police and military assets to respond to breaches as they are identified.

ActionSA is committed to ensuring the success of this initiative and will engage proactively through various mechanisms to ensure that the Department of Home Affairs effectively manages the implementation of the new tools to safeguard and restore the integrity of South Africa’s borders.
