In what can be only described as a marathon case fraught with emotions, the High Court in Johannesburg today hammered the gavel and sealed the fate of the accused, Mark Brian Harvey.
11th February 2024 was the day that Harvey intentionally and brutally killed two young ladies, Marishka Davids and Zakkiyah Raymond by dousing the pair with a flammable substance and without thought or conscience, set them alight. Both victims later succumbed to their injuries and were laid to rest.
ActionSA is pleased with the scathing judgment delivered by Judge Ismail yesterday and the two life sentences imposed, as well as seven years imprisonment for arson and lastly, five years for housebreaking – all of which will run concurrently.
ActionSA welcomes the speedy resolve of Judge Mohamed Ismail who refused to further delay the case for sentencing and recognizes that whilst any punishment will not return the victims to their family, it is an adequate closure for the loved ones left behind.
ActionA also notes that the accused had been arrested previously for criminal activities including house-breaking and possession of illegal substances and questions if had the accused faced harsher penalties for these prior criminal acts, would we still be mourning the loss of the two young women today?
We call on our Justices to take a leaf out of Judge Ismail’s book and provide the much-needed justice to victims of victims in a timely manner to help deter would-be perpetrators from committing such heinous crimes.
