ActionSA Welcomes the Sentencing of Former DA Councillor for Heinous Murder of Partner and Children

ActionSA welcomes the sentencing of former Democratic Alliance (DA) PR Councillor, Michael Buthelezi, to four terms of life imprisonment and a further 15 years by the Ladysmith Regional Court for the barbaric and calculated murder of his partner, Khombisile Nyoka, and their three young children in October 2023.

The work done by SAPS in this matter is a testament to what can be achieved when the police are committed to their constitutional mandate of protecting the most vulnerable in our society.

Crime — and especially murder — has no place in a civilised society, regardless of who the perpetrator is. That an elected public representative could commit such an unspeakable act against his own family is not only shocking, but a grim reminder of the dark scourge of violence that continues to plague our nation.

This tragic case also shines a painful spotlight on the horrifying levels of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide GBV-F) in our country. South Africa continues to experience epidemic levels of violence against women and children, and it is clear that more must be done to address the root causes of this.

ActionSA continues to advocate for a society where all women and children are safe in their homes, their communities, and in our country at large.

May the souls of Khombisile Nyoka and her innocent children — Lubanzi, Zigizemdoda, and Sibingele – rest in peace. We hope their family finds some comfort in knowing that justice has been served.
