ActionSA Welcomes the Sentencing of Trio Behind Brutal Bushbuckridge Double Murder

ActionSA welcomes the sentencing of Mpilo Clinton Twala, Advice Philimon Lubisi, and Joshua Mkhonto to life imprisonment for the horrific and senseless murders of Isaac Mdaka and Xoli Mathebula in 2020 in Xhimungwe, Bushbuckridge.

The Mpumalanga Division of the High Court has rightly delivered a strong and decisive judgment that affirms the principle that no one is above the law. This gruesome crime, which saw two men abducted, tortured with scissor jacks, and set alight in an open field, is a stark reminder of the brutality that continues to plague our communities when mob justice replaces lawful processes.

As ActionSA, we remain deeply concerned about the rise in vigilante violence and the erosion of faith in law enforcement that often drives communities to take the law into their own hands. While we understand the frustrations that stem from crime and delayed justice, there is no justification for such barbaric acts. The rule of law must remain the cornerstone of our democracy.

We commend the court’s order that the Department of Correctional Services consult the victims’ families before any consideration for parole, an important step in centring victims in our justice system.

Our thoughts are with the Mdaka and Mathebula families, who have suffered unimaginable pain and loss. While no sentence can undo their trauma, we hope that this judgment brings some measure of justice and closure.

ActionSA will continue to fight for a justice system that delivers swift, fair, and victim-centred outcomes, and for safer communities where no South African must live in fear.
