ActionSA Will Fight ANC-sponsored Motion of No Confidence in Ekurhuleni

ActionSA notes that the ANC has brought forward a Motion of No Confidence against Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor, Cllr Tania Campbell, hoping that it be debated in council by the 26th of October 2022.

This move does not come as a surprise after the ANC and EFF worked with the PA to remove the Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Cllr Mpho Phalatse. Unlike Johannesburg, the Ekurhuleni multi-party government has always been at a higher risk of collapsing as it does not hold a majority. It was only with the support of the EFF that Campbell managed to be elected mayor. If the EFF decides to back the ANC’s motion, her removal from office is a mathematical certainty, regardless of how other parties decide to vote.

It is precisely for this reason that in February this year, ActionSA expressed our concern with the stability of the coalition in Ekurhuleni, noting the possibility of the ANC and EFF deciding to cooperate to remove the multi-party government.

Despite the likelihood of this outcome, ActionSA will not give up on the residents of Ekurhuleni. We remain committed to the multi-party government and serving the interests of the residents. ActionSA reiterates the decision taken by its Senate last week to engage with all political parties in Gauteng in a bid to stabilise coalitions and ensure that we can continue to bring positive change to residents.

With the ANC likely to lose its parliamentary majority in 2024, coalition governments are the future of South Africa. ActionSA believes that we need to approach coalitions pragmatically in order to ensure stability for the citizens those coalitions are meant to serve. Governments that are perpetually on the verge of collapse will be unable to focus on the delivery of services to the residents it is supposed to serve.
