ActionSA Wishes the Women of South Africa a Happy Women’s Day

From leading in business, and civil society, to reengineering politics across the African continent and globally, women are making history. In this century more than any other time in history, women are changing our world.

However, efforts to achieve equality of the sexes remain a massive societal challenge. Women suffer the biggest brunt of most of society’s bad choices and practices.

In the workplace, the gender pay-gap hovers between 20 and 35% below the average pay for men doing the same job.

In sport, Banyana Banyana’s recent fight for equity of pay serves as an example despite performing exceedingly better than the men.

In politics, women are underrepresented in leadership positions, meaning the boys’ club remains intact. Speaking of the first women to do this or that is an inditement on our society.

At home, women shoulder most of the responsibilities despite being having to work also.

Motherhood: a demanding, challenging, but most important job of all, without pay. Imagine if mothers were to be paid for raising children or for keeping our homes in order…I’m afraid no country would afford them, even at minimum wage!

To borrow from the late Kenyan environmental activist, Dr. Wangari Maathai:

Human rights are not things that are put on the table for people to enjoy. These are things you fight for, and then you protect.”  So should we consider, Women’s Rights.

Happy Women’s Day to all the women of our country.
