ActionSA Joburg Caucus has written to the Speaker of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Council Cllr Margaret Arnolds. This follows the recent damning information pertaining decanting and the renovations of the Metro Centre.
Whilst we acknowledge an urgent need to decant the more than 3 000 City’s employees who have been left without offices since September 2023, we condemn any attempt that seeks to benefit a few elites through concocted tenders.
The previous engineering report that was presented to Joburg Property Company (JPC) outlined the scope of work needed to be done and the costing of the two recommendations that were given.
According to the report, R2 billion was deemed sufficient to deal with the structural defects of Metro Centre. However, there are fresh allegations that this amount has been ballooned to R12 billion. The City of Johannesburg is not in any state to spend billions of rands in renovations. This money can be best placed in the issue of the much-needed service delivery.
ActionSA Joburg caucus would like the report to be urgently presented before Economic Development, Section 79 committee and to make public the tender processes and the criteria that were used in awarding any lease.
Our residents are yet to know the progress pertaining Bree Street Explosion, Usindiso Building, collapsed bridges, misuse of funds aimed at improving the Helen Josephs Woman’s hostel, water shortage, load shedding and high unemployment rate. And yet the city is channelling its resources to few individuals connected to the ANC.
We, therefore, implore the Speaker of the Council Cllr Arnold to probe this matter. The City of Johannesburg is in a dire state, as service delivery has taken a backseat. It is critical that any decision that has dreadful financial implications be scrutinised before embarked into.
ActionSA Joburg Caucus has observed a new trend within the City, where costly decisions are taken at the expense of taxpayers. There is a huge void of accountability coupled with lack of leadership. The ANC-EFF led coalition is running amok of our City.
As a party rooted in rule of law and ethical leadership, we strongly believe that by making this crucial information public, this will revive the long-lost confidence in the city entities.
