ActionSA has written to the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Health, Hon Nomagugu Simelane-Mngadi requesting for urgent answers into the appalling treatment of contracted cleaners at Niemeyer Hospital in Utrecht (Madlangeni), who have allegedly not received their salaries for the past three months.
These workers, contracted through a private company, Luyandiza Investments, continue to report for duty under difficult circumstances despite not being paid.
ActionSA finds it disgraceful that the Department of Health has failed to ensure that these frontline workers are paid for their labour, especially considering the critical role they play in maintaining hygiene and safety in our healthcare facilities.
According to the workers, Luyandiza Investments claims that the Department itself is at fault, allegedly due to a lack of funds to pay service providers.
In our letter to the MEC, we requested clarity on the following:
1. Why has the Department not paid its contractor, Luyandiza Investments, for services rendered?
2. When can the affected workers expect their outstanding wages to be paid?
3. Will the Department ensure that all unpaid workers are back paid in full for the past three months?
Furthermore, we requested an update on how far the Department is in implementing he insourcing of such workers, as promised by the KZN Premier, Thami Ntuli
ActionS stands firmly with these exploited workers and will not rest until justice is served.
Ne call on the MEC to respond promptly and decisively to this matter.
