ActionSA Writes to Mpumalanga Education MEC Over Inhumane Conditions at eLusindisweni Primary

ActionSA will write to Mpumalanga Education MEC Bonakele Majuba to address the inhumane conditions at eLusindisweni Primary school in Middelburg where pupils have no toilets and classes are overcrowded.

ActionSA is also considering laying a South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) complaint as the dignity of pupils and their safety are compromised due to the conditions at the school.

When ActionSA made an unannounced visit to eLusindisweni Primary school on Monday morning, what we found was nothing short of disgusting as ceilings were in tatters, classrooms overcrowded, and the pupils didn’t have access to any working toilets.

The visit formed part of ActionSA’s nationwide public engagement campaign ahead of the State Of the Nation Address (SONA) on 9 February where we speak to South Africans about the key issues facing the country and find solutions to fix the country.

Conditions at eLusindisweni Primary school are unacceptable 27 years after democracy, and therefore ActionSA will write to MEC Majuba to urgently improve the situation.

Basic education and a safe and healthy environment are rights that all South Africans enjoy according to the constitution, and it is the job of the Mpumalanga Education Department to deliver on these rights.

ActionSA will maintain pressure on the Mpumalanga Education Department to ensure that conditions at eLusindisweni Primary school improve as soon as possible, and that the rights of pupils are protected.

ActionSA believes that the truest path toward economic empowerment and a more equal distribution of economic prosperity is through quality education for all, and we will do everything in our power to ensure that all South Africans have access to it.
