ActionSA Writes To NMB Mayor, Demands Answers Into Sewage Infrastructure Mess
Athol Trollip
ActionSA Eastern Cape Provincial Chairperson
ActionSA has written to Mayor Gay van Niekerk requesting an immediate investigation and report into the work conducted by the approved contractor or service provider in Jack Road, Missionvale, Gqeberha.
This follows the tragic death of 10-year-old Elviro Langford who drowned in an open and unsecured sewage manhole. ActionSA is profoundly disturbed and outraged by the recent incident, as it underscores the municipality’s palpable neglect and lack of urgency in addressing service delivery issues that pose significant risks to the health and safety of Nelson Mandela Bay residents.
We are dismayed by the absence of adequate measures or actions taken to secure the area prior to little Elviro‘s passing especially considering the vulnerability and safety of the children in this community. We request a comprehensive report on:
The protocol requirements and measures, if any, taken to secure not only this location but other similar excavation and or infrastructure maintenance sites as well.
The reasons behind the continued exposure of many other wastewater and storm water manholes, left open and unsecured.
Detailed explanations for the municipality’s delays in addressing critical service delivery issues related to sewage, wastewater, and storm water infrastructure.
Information on the permanent solutions that the municipality plans to implement to resolve the ongoing sewage and storm water flooding issues in Missionvale and Motherwell but all other areas of the Metro where this occurs.
Considering our recent statements and discussions with Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor, along with senior official Mr. Barry Martin, it is apparent that there are underlying complexities within the sewage and stormwater infrastructure of this Metro. These complexities fall under the watch and responsibility of Cllr Khanya Ngqisha (MMC Infrastructure & Engineering), and it appears that the Municipality is actively concealing them.
