ActionSA Ekurhuleni Youth Forum is deeply concerned about the dire situation tacing students at the Ekurhuleni West College (EWC). We have been closely monitoring the developments and are dismayed by reports of students being left helpless and unprepared for their exams.
We call for a more comprehensive approach in resolving these challenges.
The issues are multifaceted and alarming. Students lack textbooks and learning materials, and many have not attended lectures due to absent lecturers. Others are forced to participate in hazardous practical learning without proper safety gear. To compound these challenges, students are struggling to make ends meet, with many facing eviction due to unpaid rents and going hungry due to unpaid allowances.
ActionSA Youth Forum will not neglect the educational needs and well-being of EWC students, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds. It is our responsibility as leaders to ensure that our institutions of higher learning provide a supportive and conducive environment for students to thrive.
We have written to the EWC management, urging them to take immediate action to address these concerns. We await their prompt response and resolution. ActionSA is committed to supporting the students of EWC and ensuring that their education is not compromised.
Moreover, this crisis highlights a broader issue in our region. The absence of a traditional university in Ekurhuleni is a glaring omission, forcing our students to migrate to other parts of Gauteng or settle for TVET colleges. This is unacceptable, especially considering the region’s high population density and growth prospects.
We believe that it is imperative to establish a fully-fledged university in Ekurhuleni, providing our students with access to quality higher education and research opportunities. This will not
only address the current capacity constraints but also foster economic growth, innovation, and social mobility in our region.
We will be engaging our caucuses in the legislature and parliament to bring this matter to the attention of the Higher Education portfolio committee. We demand that our colleges be held accountable for providing quality education and support services to our students. Furthermore, we will be advocating for the establishment of a university in Ekurhuleni, as a matter of urgency.
The situation at EWC is a wake-up call for our society. We must act swiftly to address the systemic issues plaguing our education system. ActionSA Youth Forum will continue fighting for the rights and interests of our students and residents in Ekurhuleni.
