ActionSA Rand West Youth Forum Conducts Oversight Visit on Local Parks

ActionSA Rand West Youth Forum Regional Executive Committee conducted an oversight visit to assess the overall conditions of various parks in Mohlakeng, Randfontein. Disappointingly, but unsurprisingly, the state of the local parks throughout Mohlakeng is appalling with no visible plans to restore them. Parks that were intended to serve as recreational spaces for outdoor entertainment, community health and wellness, as well as provide an environment for social cohesion amongst young people and fellow community members have now been turned into dumping sites and crime zones.

This has been allowed to happen by previous administrations of local government and continues under the current local government administration. ActionSA demands that tough measures be taken against this continued decay and for the municipality to develop plans for restoring these parks, as well as stopping the vandalism and crime that have become the norm. This level of poor service delivery against the communities of Mohlakeng can never be tolerated, and we vow to ensure that those in power restore the conditions of all local parks in Mohlakeng.

ActionSA RandWest Youth Forum believes that restoring these parks will help promote the quality of life of young people in Mohlakeng, affording them a safe space to participate in social activities within their communities that will help them stay away from inappropriate activities. Furthermore, refurbishing the broken swings, slides and see-saws will also promote safety and security for young people while they are utilising these parks as a playground.

We shall persist in pressuring the municipality to do justice by the youth of Mohlakeng who, frequently, lack alternative entertainment facilities within their communities, which then acts as a catalyst for them becoming involved with substances and even unlawful activities.
