ActionSA’s Inner City Rejuvenation Motion Passed in Council, Victory for the Residents of Joburg

After years of advocating for Inner-City Rejuvenation, the City of Joburg Council has finally given the green light to ActionSA’s motion. Through this motion, the resolution taken by Council in 2018, to award 154 properties to the private sector including 37 abandoned factories earmarked for re-development, will come to fruition.

In 2018, the re-development of these properties – valued at R32 billion at the time – was to create a total of 22 000 job opportunities during the construction phase, resulting in 14 000 social housing units. We believe that these figures have increased tremendously over the years.

As per ActionSA’s motion, Council has resolved that:

– In line with the City’s Mayoral Priorities and the City’s Strategic Priorities, the regeneration of the Inner-City of Johannesburg, therefore, remains a key priority and that Council-approved Inner-City Rejuvenation plan be reinstated.

– Upon reinstatement, the execution of the Council-approved report of 2019 to put on a tender 37 factories across the city, be awarded to the private sector to build affordable accommodation (social housing units) for our most vulnerable residents of the City.

– Council be furnished with a progress report on the implementation of the council resolution on the 154 properties awarded to the private sector & the 37 abandoned factories for re-development, on a quarterly basis.

ActionSA is committed to the Inner-City Rejuvenation plan, a program which seeks to revive the City of Johannesburg to its former glory and rid it of all criminal elements.

We reiterate our call that Johannesburg can be revived only if there is a political will, and we have taken it upon ourselves to create a better city that can be transferred to the next generations.

ActionSA will be working closely with the executive to ensure that Inner City Rejuvenation becomes a reality. We are not going to allow this important project be stalled again when some of our residents live in absolute squalor in these building, violating their human rights.
