ActionSA’s Intervention Results in Arrest of Alleged Property Hijacker in Ekurhuleni

I am pleased to announce that following ActionSA’s intervention in the hijacking of residential property in Primrose in Ekurhuleni this morning, the alleged hijacker has since been arrested and taken into custody by the Primrose SAPS.

ActionSA was informed of the property hijacking by a community member, who requested our intervention following the harassment and intimidation of tenants and community members by the hijackers. I subsequently accompanied ActionSA Cllr Tlhogi Moseki, former MMC for Community Safety in Ekurhuleni, to investigate.

Upon our arrival, we were informed about the hijacking of the property by an alleged undocumented foreign national. We managed to get in contact with the rightful owner of the property (who lives abroad) and they confirmed that it had indeed been hijacked. The property also appears to be illegally connected to the City’s electricity network.

We were further informed of the harassment and intimidation of tenants and community members by the hijacker and also learnt of the death of a woman at the property approximately a year ago. This resulted in a case of suspected murder being opened, but with little progress.

Cllr Moseki and I subsequently met with the Primrose Police Station Commander, Colonel Nzuza, to raise our concerns and seek an update. Colonel Nzuza and his team took swift action resulting in the apprehension of the suspect.

This is a victory for law enforcement. During our investigations into the matter today we were informed that the hijacking of the initial property we visited was not an isolated incident, and that the same hijackers appear to have engaged in similar unlawful activities at other properties.

Following our meeting with the Primrose SAPS, I have also written to Home Affairs Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, and the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) to intervene in the matter as the hijacker is allegedly an undocumented foreign national. ActionSA, therefore, requests that the Minister of Home Affairs refer the matter to the DHA, working with local law enforcement, to ensure that our immigration laws are enforced.

ActionSA believes that the rule of law should be restored to South African communities, including our existing immigration laws. We cannot allow rampant lawlessness to go unaddressed – without the rule of law, economic growth can never be ignited across the country.

ActionSA will continue to monitor this case and stand ready to work with the City of Ekurhuleni, law enforcement agencies and DHA to ensure that the rule of law is restored.
