ActionSA has made the decision to write to the Speaker of the eThekwini Municipality, Mr Thabani Nyawose, requesting that he ensures that the findings of the City Integrity and Investigation Unit (CIIU) report be made available to councillors in time for tomorrow’s council meeting, Thursday, 09 November 2023.
Failure to do so, will indeed suggest that he in complicit in the cover-up to defraud eThekwini residents.
ActionSA tabled a motion before council to remove the Board members of the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC) – which will be debated tomorrow – due to their failure to open a criminal case with the South African Police Service (SAPS) within the 7-day period we had requested, leaving us no choice but to call for their removal for their failure to act within the public’s interest.
We believe that making this information available to councillors before the council meeting will allow them to vote from a well-informed position, enabling them to make the most sensible decision when voting on this matter.
On 28 September 2023, ActionSA wrote to the Head of the CIIU, Mr Thulani Ntobela, seeking immediate investigation into the matter, after receiving further information from our informant that eThekwini’s Deputy City Manager, Mr Sipho Cele, had allegedly signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), committing the Municipality to use ratepayer rands to pay for the ANCWL elective conference.
We were pleased to receive word that the CIIU has completed its investigation and has submitted the full report of findings to City Manager, Mr Musa Mbhele.
However, we were left dumbfounded when Mr Mbhele decided to snub our request to have access to the report and its findings, which has led us to believe that this is a ploy from Mr Mbhele to protect those who have been implicated in the findings.
We maintain that the public has a right to have this information made available to them, most importantly, they have to be made aware of the individuals who conspired to steal over R5 million from them, while they battle with issues of lack of basic service delivery.
