Introducing Athol Trollip

Athol, born in 1964 in Bedford, South Africa, has carved a remarkable path as a dedicated and influential political figure, demonstrating unwavering commitment to positive change and leadership.

Commencing his political journey with the Progressive Federal Party in 1980, Trollip’s passion for public service led him to become a municipal councillor for the Democratic Party in 1995. His exemplary leadership qualities were soon recognized as he ascended to the positions of provincial chairperson in 1998 and, subsequently, the leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Eastern Cape in 2002—a role he remarkably held for 15 years. Trollip served as a Member of the Provincial Legislature from 1999 to 2009.

In 2009, Trollip transitioned to the national stage, serving as a Member of Parliament and later assuming the vital role of Leader of the opposition in the National Assembly. Despite facing challenges, including an unsuccessful bid for party leader in 2007, Trollip remained steadfast in his commitment to progressive politics.

The year 2015 witnessed Trollip’s return to the forefront of the DA, as he assumed the role of the party’s mayoral candidate for the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality in the 2016 Local Government Elections. Simultaneously, he was elected as the Federal Chairperson of the DA at the party’s Federal Congress in May 2016.

Trollip’s tenure as the Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, while encountering challenges, saw positive developments. The municipality received a ratings upgrade from Moody’s during his two-year term, reflecting his dedication to effective governance.

Even amid the complexities of coalition politics and challenges with his deputy mayor, Trollip continued to champion positive change. His leadership left an indelible mark on Nelson Mandela Bay, emphasizing progress and development.

As a seasoned politician, Trollip’s resilience and dedication became evident when he declared his intention to run for the position of Chairperson of the DA’s Federal Council in 2019. Despite facing an electoral setback, Trollip maintained his positive spirit, resigning from active roles within the DA. Later, he joined the ActionSA political party in February 2022 and currently serves as the ActionSA Eastern Cape Chairperson, as well as a Senate Member.

Athol Trollip’s political journey is a testament to his enduring commitment to positive and transformative leadership. From local politics to national prominence, his legacy is one of resilience, optimism, and an unwavering belief in the potential for positive change in the political landscape.
