City of Tshwane Named “Safest Metro in South Africa”
Press Statement by Michael Beaumont
ActionSA National Chairperson
The City of Tshwane being named South Africa’s safest metro is not just a welcome title, but a testament to the progress being made by ActionSA Mayor, Dr Nasiphi Moya, ActionSA MMC for Community Safety, Hannes Coetzee, and the multiparty coalition in restoring the rule of law in our Capital.
According to the South African Cities Network, this recognition makes Tshwane safer than major US cities such as Atlanta and New Orleans, as well as its capital, Washington DC. It is encouraging to see a city once known for some of the highest crime rates in the country begin to make tangible progress in addressing lawlessness.
That a corner is slowly being turned in our Capital is evidenced by reports such as this, alongside improvements in the City’s credit ratings and the nearing completion of water infrastructure projects in Hammanskraal. Some of the ongoing and proposed interventions to combat crime include:
Expanding the work of the Integrated By-law Enforcement Committee (IBEC) into the inner city and continuing to ensure visible community safety initiatives,
Efforts to extend IBEC’s collaboration to include other municipalities, districts, and the provincial government,
Taking proactive steps to protect municipal infrastructure by installing cameras and early warning detection systems, and enhancing integrated community policing,
As set out in the draft budget, the allocation of funds to employ 200 additional TMPD officers,
Advancing the insourcing of personnel to strengthen the in-house capacity of the Community Safety Department.
The title of “South Africa’s Safest Metro” affirms that where it governs, ActionSA and its coalition partners are beginning to reverse the legacy of lawlessness that has plagued the City of Tshwane.
Whilst the work is far from complete, we welcome this recognition and commend Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya and her coalition team for their ongoing efforts.
