Critical City Departments Suffer While Equipment Rots at The Metro Centre
Joint Press Statement by Sarah Wissler and Marcel Courtiers
ActionSA City of Johannesburg Chairperson, and Whip of Public Safety Committee
ActionSA finds it entirely unacceptable that while critical service delivery departments in the City of Johannesburg struggle with inadequate office equipment, vital assets at the Metro Centre are left to deteriorate, be stolen or vandalised.
Following the decanting of the Metro Centre for safety reasons, all departments abandoned their office equipment, including furniture, copiers, and IT assets. The City of Johannesburg has utterly failed to ensure that these items were secured and moved to a safe environment for future use. This is a disgraceful failure of governance and resource management.
What is even more shocking is that the City continues to pay for leased copiers that remain abandoned at the Metro Centre. This is an outrageous misuse of taxpayers’ money. While the City irresponsibly funds equipment that is left unattended, departments that are essential for the functioning of our city are left with little to no resources. This is a betrayal of the residents who expect efficient service delivery and responsible financial management from City officials.
ActionSA demands immediate action. City departments that are in dire need of equipment should be allowed to collect what they require and provide a register of items taken for proper asset management. The current situation is not just negligent, it is a gross mismanagement of public funds and a clear indication of administrative incompetence.
We cannot, and will not, allow this level of waste and inefficiency to continue. Taxpayers’ money must be used responsibly, and city resources must be distributed to where they are needed most. ActionSA implores the relevant City officials to urgently address this failure before more taxpayers’ money and resources are lost due to sheer neglect.
The residents of Johannesburg deserve better, and we will not stand by while critical departments suffer due to reckless mismanagement.
