DA votes with ANC to increase councillor salaries in Joburg – Exposing that Motion to Dissolve Council is a Sham

Today the City of Johannesburg DA caucus voted with the ANC to increase the salaries of all councillors at an additional cost of R5.5 million for the city per year or R20,000 per councillor.

This vote highlights two important matters for Joburg residents. Firstly, in a City where people die in fires because of failure to enforce by-laws or respond to emergencies, these two parties have seen fit to reward themselves. Secondly, it proves how the DA’s purported motion to dissolve the council was always political theatre while they knew it was never going to succeed.

If the DA were serious about the prospects of dissolving the municipal council in November, their councillors would not be voting to increase their own salaries into the next financial year.

The DA’s refusal to negotiate a majority to remove Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda and install a coalition government of its former partners must be seen for what it is – the tacit support for the continuation of ANC and EFF governance in the City. The motion to dissolve the council is nothing but a sleight of hand aimed at distracting Joburg residents from this fact, something which was exposed today.

Instead of a new multi-party coalition government re-prioritising the funds of the city to the service delivery priorities which are desperately needed, the residents of Joburg have a Mayor who has no vision, no solutions for a complex city and whose strings are pulled by the ANC and EFF. The DA must cease criticising this government, because they ensure its continued existence.

The past week’s events in Marshalltown show the disastrous effects a poorly run city has on residents, and ActionSA, therefore, appeals to the DA to reconsider its approach and restore good governance and service delivery to the city’s more than five million residents.

ActionSA also believes that at a time when the residents of Johannesburg are suffering from above-inflation rate increases and service delivery failures, councillors should not be rewarded with salary increases. These kind of increases would never have been entertained in the private sector with any entity mirroring the level of performance of the Joburg Council and they should not be entertained in Joburg today.

ActionSA recognises that so many residents have been abandoned by parties who promised to be an alternative to the ANC, and we will continuously work to ensure that ActionSA is a home to every resident of this City.
