Dodgy ANC-EFF Government Reject Motion Aimed at Bringing Service Delivery in Matholesville

Yesterday, the ANC and EFF proved yet again that they have no interest in addressing the systemic poverty faced by the people of Johannesburg. This partnership of inconvenience bluntly rejected a pro-poor ActionSA-sponsored motion recommending adequate water, sanitation, and electricity in Matholesville.

However, this was no surprise as we have observed the new anti-poor posture adopted by these two political parties. These same parties have rejected the motion to eradicate the bucket toilet system in Johannesburg only to bring it back in Council through back doors. Their strategy is old, and we anticipate that they will return the motion so that they propose it. They must know that when that time comes, ActionSA will support it irrespective of the sponsor.

The residents of Matholesville will continue to be subjected to inhumane conditions simply because ANC and EFF opted for a party line above the needs of the same voters who mandated them to Council.

It is worth noting that among those who voted against a motion to uplift Matholesville residents is an ANC Councillor who represents the same ward. While we appreciate the need to tear the party line, we firmly believe this must not be at the expense of our poor masses.

We, therefore, remind Councillors of the Oath that they took before becoming the Councillors. As ActionSA Joburg Caucus, we assure the residents of Matholesville and other areas that we will never stop advocating for their rights.

The ANC-EFF vote against this motion is a vote against basic Human Rights as enshrined in Section 16 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.
