eThekwini Metro Proposes Outrageous Tariff Increases

ActionSA is deeply concerned that the proposed tariff increases by the eThekwini Municipality for the new financial year starting 1 July 2023 is going to place enormous financial pressures on the residents and businesses of the municipality.
The proposed tariff increases are:
Electricity: 21.9%
Water
Domestic: 14.9%
Business: 15.9%
Refuse Removal
Domestic: 8%
Business: 7-9%
Sanitation
Domestic: 11.9%
Business: 12.9%
Rates: 8.9%
These increases which are way above the current inflation rate of 6.9% will be unaffordable to many residents and businesses. Households and businesses of eThekwini have had been incredibly hard hit by the after effects of Covid-19, April 2022 floods and the July unrest, leaving hundreds without employment, and such increases will further cripple the people of eThekwini, and businesses.
This ANC led municipality has been plagued by corruption and incompetence over many years which has led to current service deliveries at an all-time low and E-coli levels and water leakages at record highs. Within this context, it is quite bizarre that the municipality would be wanting residents and business to pay higher than inflation increases for what can only be considered as pathetic service delivery.
It is unfortunate the people of eThekwini are currently reaping the decisions made by the EFF and the NFP to keep the ANC in power within the Municipality, after residents had voted to keep the ANC out of power.
ActionSA will at all stages of the budget process argue and vote against these proposed increases and will be lobbying other political parties to oppose likewise.
ActionSA urges all businesses and residents to raise their voices against these increases and hold the various political parties that support these increases to account.
