Gauteng crime statistics paint province as rape capital of South Africa
Funzi Ngobeni
ActionSA Gauteng Provincial Chairperson
ActionSA is extremely concerned about the near double-digit increase in the Gauteng provincial crime statistics which paints the picture that the province is emerging as the rape capital of the country.
Presenting the crime statistics to the Gauteng legislature, Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela revealed that between 1 October and 31 December 2022, incidents of rape increased by 9%, sexual assault by 8.5% and sexual offences by a whopping 26.2%.
The Gauteng crime statistics reaffirm ActionSA’s view that the ANC government’s crime interventions have failed to stem lawlessness in South Africa, and have instead led to an increase in violent crimes.
Furthermore, women in our province continue to go unprotected from gender-based violence (GBV) and safety houses as the province has been unable to provide adequate safety houses and community support for victims of gender-based violence.
ActionSA, a party committed to the rule of law, will continue to champion safety and crime-fighting interventions in the councils we serve, and lobby the provincial government to take a more hardline approach when it comes to crime.
Our communities are being let down by the ANC’s failures to address crime, and ActionSA is committed to fixing the situation, and restoring law and order to our communities.
